Too Much Rain

It has been a very wet summer here in the south. Along with the rain has been strong gusts of wind, which has unfortunately taken out the bulk of three of my trees. My son in law was nice enough to come over and take the damaged limbs out with a chainsaw, saving me a lot of hand sawing and cursing. Since he cut my workload down by 75%, I told him that I would clean up and haul the branches off myself. Well that was my intention anyway. Living with a Pyrenees means that most of what you do, you don’t do alone.

I pull my gloves on and head out across the yard, followed closely by Kiah. When we are outside, Kiah does a lot of smiling and bouncing. I understand as she grows the bounce will slowly diminish, I hope the smile doesn’t though, I really like that smile. The other problem as she grows is her increase in weight. Don’t get that wrong, to be healthy she needs to grow at a steady pace. The reason I dread that is because she has learned that she can lay on the branches and ride in comfort while attacking the fluttering leaves. Not only are the branches large enough to make a good workout for me dragging them across the yard, but the added weight of Kiah, and the fact that I can’t do anything while laughing, makes the whole job just a bit longer to accomplish.

Since I’m new to the breed I’m not sure of how their personality responds to the rain. Emi (the Golden Retriever) goes out in the rain when necessary but doesn’t seek it out. Kiah seems to actively embrace the water pouring out of the sky. Rarely does she remain dry on a rain day. She explores, inspects, runs, smells and generally disregards any variation in weather conditions. During the first hard storm last week, after the rain had let up enough so you could see across the yard, she went out to look around. She was the first to notice the tree and barked that there was something different in her domain. Thanks to Kiah I know when something changes, my floors are perpetually soggy and my life is more interesting.
